How I Keep My Bikes Safe in NYC (Using Criminal Justice Theory)

One of the biggest pushbacks I hear about buying an expensive cargo bike is the risk of theft. I get it. But I encourage people not to let fear stop them from making an amazing, life-changing decision. The risk of theft is worth managing — not avoiding.
I have a PhD in Criminal Justice, so let me put it to use.
The Theory
The vast majority of bike crime is crime of opportunity — the bike is available and someone feels they can take it.
Using Routine Activities Theory, crime commonly occurs when there's a suitable target, a motivated offender, and a lack of capable guardianship. We can't control the offender, but we can make our bikes less "suitable" and increase guardianship.
Making the Bike a Less Suitable Target
1. Use a top-of-the-line lock.
I use the Hiplok D1000 and X loop chain on all my bikes. Use promo code 4MADDY15 for 15% off all Hiplok items (except the D1000 line).
Good locks create serious friction — they require time and special equipment (like an angle grinder) rather than just a pair of clippers.
2. Hide the bike under a non-branded motorcycle cover.
I think this is especially effective if covers are common in your area. In NYC, I see them everywhere, so my bikes blend into the environment. You can't steal what you don't see.
Covers also add friction — someone would have to lift it to see what's underneath, which is a behavior thieves are less likely to do. I use zloks or zip ties to secure the cover in place.
I use my $30 motorcycle cover constantly. It goes on as soon as I get home (to avoid drawing attention) and comes out with me — I cover the bike anytime I'll be somewhere for more than an hour.
Increasing Guardianship
1. People. I always park where there's heavy foot traffic, near venue doors, and where security guards walk around. Extra eyes act as a deterrent.
2. Lighting. Research suggests that improved lighting deters property crime because offenders are more likely to be seen. I always park in well-lit areas.
3. AirTags or GPS. These help locate your bike if it gets moved. Not perfect, but they add a layer.
4. Cameras. I park where there are visible external cameras. Banks are one of my favorite spots.
New Tech
It's also worth mentioning that new systems are adding built-in security. Bosch eBike systems now have integrated alarms, GPS, and remote locking capabilities.
Don't let the fear of theft keep you from cargo biking. Manage the risk, ride the bike, change your life.
