Summer Biking Tips: How to Keep Your Kids Cool on a Cargo Bike

Summer biking with kids is amazing — but heat requires some planning. Here are 5 tips that keep our rides comfortable, plus bonus advice from my Instagram community.

1. Keep them hydrated

Pack lots of water that's easily accessible. We love Thermos bottles and Munchkin 360 sippy cups.

2. Install a sunshade

Many front loaders have custom options. If yours doesn't, tap your biking network — there are lots of creative DIY solutions out there.

3. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen

Apply and reapply. We use Neutrogena facesticks and Babyganics SPF50.

4. Take lots of breaks in shady spots

Self-explanatory but easy to forget when you're trying to get somewhere.

5. Park your bike in the shade

This is key for when it's time to go. Otherwise, the bike (and especially the seat) will be scorching hot.

Bonus: Stay hydrated yourself

It's easy to forget to take care of yourself when you're managing kids. I pack Bubs Naturals electrolytes in my water bottle — lemon is my favorite flavor. Use promo code CBM20 for 20% off.

My Instagram followers added some great ideas:

  • Sun covers: @blaqpaks makes incredible sun covers — thick mesh, breathable, provides shade, pretty much indestructible. I use mine most of the year.
  • Portable fans: Handheld fans that kids love.
  • Seat blankets: Keep a blanket to cover seats if there's no shade — the seats absorb a lot of heat.
  • Spray bottles: Carry a spray bottle to cool the bike and your kids' clothes.
  • UV clothing: UVSkinz items for sun protection.
  • Sunglasses: Don't forget kids' sunglasses.
  • Watch your battery: E-bike batteries are less efficient above 25°C. You don't want to be across the city with an empty battery, moaning kids, and really hot weather.
