Why Trike Cargo Bikes Are Great for Families (From a Bunch Bike Owner)

When most people think of cargo bikes, they picture two-wheelers. But trikes — three-wheeled cargo bikes — are an entirely different (and often better) option for families. We got our Bunch Bike 4 and it changed how I think about cargo biking.

Reason 1: You Don't Need Balance

This is the biggest one. Trikes stay upright on their own. You don't need to be a confident cyclist. You don't need to have ever ridden a bike as an adult. You literally just sit down and pedal. My mom, who hasn't been on a bike in 30 years, rode our Bunch Bike on her first try.

This makes trikes especially great for:

  • People who didn't grow up biking
  • Parents with physical differences that affect balance
  • Anyone who's nervous about hauling kids on two wheels
  • Older family members who want to participate

Reason 2: The Cargo Capacity Is Insane

The Bunch Bike 4 fits 4 kids comfortably. Four. Most two-wheel front loaders max out at 2–3. If you have a larger family, or if your kids have friends who want rides (they will), a trike gives you the space.

We regularly carry:

  • 3 kids + groceries
  • 2 kids + a dog + bags
  • 1 kid + the entire week's farmer's market haul

The bucket is wide enough that kids can sit side by side, which means less fighting over who sits in front.

Reason 3: They're Just Fun

Something about a trike makes people smile. Strangers wave. Other parents ask questions. Kids beg for rides. Our Bunch Bike has become a community conversation starter in a way our two-wheelers never did.

The low speed and stability also make trikes more relaxing to ride. You're not managing balance and traffic and kids simultaneously — you're just... riding.

The Trade-Offs

Trikes are wider, which makes tight city streets and bike paths trickier. They're also heavier and harder to store. In NYC, I keep mine outside with a motorcycle cover and locks. They don't turn as sharply as two-wheelers. And they're generally slower.

But for a lot of families — especially those new to cargo biking — the trade-offs are worth it.

Our Setup

We have the Bunch Bike 4 with:

  • Rain cover (essential in NYC)
  • Extra seat padding
  • Rear rack for bags
  • The electric assist is a must if you have any hills
